When breast-feeding begins, the energy needs of young mothers go up: Each day their bodies now require an additional 250 kcal more than in the late phase of pregnancy. However it's important to note here, that the total amount of this energy does not need to be replaced by eating, because a mother's fat reserves created during pregnancy can now be used up. Women should just make sure they don't lose weight too quickly - and keep eating about the same amount as they did in the late phase of the pregnancy. Rapid weight loss should certainly be avoided - because that could harm the mother and/or reduce her breast-milk.

Although the first 9 kg come off relatively easily, those last 4.5 or 7 kg are often stubborn. Be patient. After all, it took 9 months to gain those pregnancy pounds. Reckon with it taking 12 months to return to the pre-pregnancy shape.
